I've decided to write a story once more, maybe to make myself as well as those who reads my story to realise the importance of your loved ones. Wrote it casually, so don't blame me for my spelling errors, grammar mistakes or the content. Thank you =]
An unforgettable incident + cherishing my loved ones
The last bell rang, announcing that lessons were officially over. I grabbed my bag and walked home briskly, enjoying the mild breeze from the beautiful afternoon. I was about to press the button to activate the lift when a man rushed out from the door that opened. Despite moving a step sideward, his broad shoulders still came clashing with mine and I was immediately knocked down on the floor.
“Hey, can’t you watch where you are going?” the well-built guy merely ignored my words and continue running further away from me. I gave chase and grabbed on to his ragged coat. He shook loose of my arms and threw me on the floor once more. He picked up speed and was no longer in sight as soon as I regained stability. Helpless, I decided to go home. Upon reaching for my bag, a piece of glimmering jewellery captured my attention and I picked it up, hoping it would be worth a fortune. However, after careful examination, I realized it was similar to the one my mum wore for banquets and wedding dinners. Feeling something was not right, I immediately rushed for the lift.
My anxiety became fear as I stepped out of the lift and realized my house door was wide open. I dashed in and found my mum lying on the floor near the carpet.
“Mum! Are you alright? Mum, speak to me, mum!” I shook the person dearest to me vigorously, hoping she would show some kind of understanding to what I had said. Wasting not a single second, I called for the ambulance and waited impatiently for the medics to arrive. Shivering at the thought of losing my mum, I could not help but recall the mean stuff I had said to my mum as she reprimanded me for my wrongdoings. My mum had been the only breadwinner of this family as my dad had passed away when I was young. My only companions these years were cousins that visited us occasionally and the technology my mum tried her best to provide. The only kin I had was now lying right in front of me, with bruises and traces of blood that surrounded her face.
Time seemed to pass slowly as though wanting me to repent on whatever I had said to my mum. All these years, I had never said a single word of appreciation to my dearest mum, and even threw tantrums at her. There were several nights I had unknowingly seen my mum looking at my dad’s photo, crying painstakingly as she tried to minimize her wails to the lowest. I felt miserable, but could never take up courage to apologise to her.
“Son, would you be home for lunch today?” she managed to catch my attention before I stepped out of house and I nodded my head. My heartached even more as I noticed on the table were my favourite food.
The medics came and immediately brought my mum to the hospital. I cried even harder as the medics mentioned her heartbeat was weakening in the ambulance. Upon arriving at the hospital, I was stopped by several nurses as they wheeled my mum into the operation theatre. I waited helplessly as they operated her.
Several hours passed and there were still no signs of the doctors coming out from the theatre. Finally, the door was pushed open and the doctor came to me. With my eyes totally swollen and the sadness so overwhelming, my worries came out from my mouth, muffled and blurred.
“Your mum is alright, she was punched violently on her face several times, but we had sew up her wounds and would be awake in a couple of hours.” It was the first time I felt words that assuring. Nurses wheeled out my mum and I took hold of her hand, unwillingly to let go of my mum for another second while calling out to my mum.
“Mum! Turn on your TV!” I rushed my mum to switch on the TV as I ran into the ward with the fruits washed.
“The police had tracked down the man who broke into a household and violently attacked the woman in the house. He had took a total of 2k worth jewelleries and fled off. We caution all Singaporeans to be wary of burglars and be on your guard against these thefts.” The news report continued and I switched it off. I gave my mum and hug and apologized to her for all the mistakes I had done. I realized how hard it was to put aside one’s pride and admit one’s mistake. It was important that i cherish the ones i love and protect them.
The characters in the story are NOT based on real characters. Should there be any resemblance it is purely coincidental.
